Jesus was different than you think. A real person, with a heart for people, his message was radical in his day and ours. Though he had endless patience with people, he had none with injustice. Furious when the poor were taken advantage of, he defended women and welcomed children. Get the real story here—and a glimpse at what life was like with the real Jesus.

The stories of what happened to people who met Jesus along the way tell us a lot about him. Even if they only spent a few minutes with Jesus, the trajectory of their lives shifted their entire universe.
On a day when Jesus was teaching in the temple, the leaders who pretended to be religious threw a woman at his feet—she was half-dressed, wholly humiliated, and torn from a bed that wasn’t her own.
Clearly, this scene was less about her and more about baiting Jesus. She was just a pawn in the game to trap Jesus. What will you do with her? Jesus saw right through their taunts. They accused her so they could accuse him. They picked up rocks, ready to throw—at her? At Jesus? All they wanted was to catch him breaking either Roman or Moses’ law.
But to their unanswerable question, Jesus bent down and wrote something with his finger in the sand. Then he looked around. “Let him who is without sin among you, be the first to throw a stone at her.”
Their eyes dropped at his words. Then the thud of rocks followed in the dirt.
What did Jesus scribble in the sand? Maybe a list of names from the crowd who were also guilty. Maybe a list of secret sins and every person saw theirs plain as day. We don’t know.
That’s when Jesus told the woman to look up. They stood there alone. Where are your accusers? he asked her. No one condemns you. Neither do I.
Jesus isn’t going soft on adultery; he’s giving her a chance to change her life. He cared less about her past and more about her future.
Maybe it was the first time she had ever seen mercy or been shown kindness.
You can be sure it was the moment her entire universe changed.
That’s what meeting Jesus did to people.

He Gets Us: Jesus shook things up

When you turned on your device just now, it likely flashed today’s date. No matter what you believe about Jesus, his life split history into two—the years coming before him (b.c.) and the two thousand plus years that have followed him.
If you’ve wondered, why should it matter who someone is from two thousand years ago on the other side of the earth? What difference does it make to me?—that’s a great question.
Who is the real Jesus? He’s been portrayed by miscellaneous groups in every generation. To answer that question, it helps to go to the source.
In his day, Jesus’ enemies accused him of enjoying himself too much at parties and hanging out with the wrong people. They feared him because he challenged the norm.
Look closely and you’ll see Jesus was…
Fearless; never backing down from doing what is right.
Vulnerable; allowing us to get close enough to know him.
Compassionate; entering into our pain.
And what makes his invitation to us all the more meaningful is that his world was as mean-spirited and divisive as ours today. Long before COVID, fear and other contagions were also viral. Yet, Jesus stepped into people’s space, bringing the anxious, comfort, the sick, healing, and joy to everyone who welcomed him in.
Jesus…he showed up. He sat across from people at the dinner table and wept at family funerals. He invited people to know him. He taught them how to live in a dysfunctional world (his was, too). His words weren’t just radical for the first century, they’re still extreme today.
No one cares like that. Except he did. He insisted on human dignity, that every person matters.
No one teaches like that. Yet the change he ushered in still reverberates today.
The way Jesus called out the toxic religious and political systems turned history upside down. He’s a radical in any decade—which makes him a worthwhile model to live by today.

We’ve looked at Jesus’ radical impact on culture—now we get personal. Can I relate to Jesus’ “normal” life—in all his quiet and personal decisions? Who did Jesus love?

Everyone has an opinion about Jesus. But who did he claim to be? Did he agree with all the things people said about him? Did he say he was the only way to God? Let’s go directly to the source and look at seven ways Jesus actually told us who he was when he walked among us. It might change what we think about him and that might change everything.

Who did Jesus say he was?

In this plan, we’ll explore the often misunderstood word joy, and we’ll look at how Jesus viewed and prioritized it in his own life. In a culture driven by frenzied productivity, Jesus embraced frequent moments of rest and connection. In particularly hard times, it was moments of joyful respite that got him through rough patches.

What was so important to Jesus that He willingly gave up a comfortable life? A sense of pride or importance? Or well-deserved payback? He didn’t want these things like we would expect. But the more He rejected the normal path to success, the more His impact grew. Jesus didn’t want any of these things—instead He was after a different way of living. Better than anything we could imagine.
